Commodities Market Summary
Gold traders are the most bullish in five weeks as
investors expanded their bullion holdings near a record on mounting speculation
that central banks will have to do more to bolster economic growth. Gold rose
3.2 percent to $1,617.40 an ounce on the Comex in New York this year, extending
11 consecutive annual gains. That compares with a 2.6 percent gain in the
Standard & Poor’s GSCI gauge of 24 commodities and a 7.9 percent advance in
the MSCI All-Country World Index of equities. Treasuries returned 1.9 percent,
a Bank of America Corp. index shows. Oil headed for a second weekly gain in New
York after applications for unemployment relief unexpectedly declined last week
in the U.S., the world’s biggest consumer of crude. Oil for September delivery
was up 4 cents at $93.40 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York
Mercantile Exchange at 12:25 p.m. Sydney time after climbing 1 cent yesterday.
Prices are 5.5 percent lower since the start of the year. Brent crude for
September settlement was unchanged at $113.22 a barrel on the London-based ICE
Futures Europe exchange after advancing 1 percent yesterday. The European
benchmark’s premium to West Texas Intermediate was at $19.83. It closed at
$19.86 yesterday, the widest gap since April.
